Major Upgrades Coming To Jones Beach This Summer

JONES BEACH, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- Some major improvements are coming to Jones Beach for the summer season.

The exciting upgrades include new expanded restrooms, meaning no more long lines for ladies.

The updated bathrooms feature new Corian counter tops, tile, stalls and plumbing, 1010 WINS' Mona Rivera reported.

And yummy new items are being added to the menu, according to State Parks spokesperson George Gorman.

"It's going to be more enjoyable -- burritos, fresh fish, fresh seafood," he told WCBS 880's Sophia Hall Wednesday. And of course, the burgers and fries will still be around.

For the little ones, there is Adventure Playground.

"A playground for younger kids, small splash park for them to enjoy. And older kids, which will have ziplines and all the adventure-type playground apparatus," Gorman said.

The renovation will cost $30 million, and officials say there will still be lots of attractions open for Memorial Day weekend and the Bethpage Air Show, Rivera reported.

Gorman said the newly renovated bathrooms will also be open in time for the massive holiday crowds.

"The bathrooms and comfort stations will be open this weekend, Memorial Day weekend. They're re-designed, they can accommodate more people," he said.

But the food concessions are still under construction, so Gorman said there will be tents and trailers set up for vendors. The concessions are expected to be completed this summer.

The Bethpage Airs Show at Jones Beach will take place May 23 and 24 between 12 p.m. and 5 p.m.

Gorman said if the weather cooperates, Long Island beaches could have a banner year.

Pre-season permits and event sales are already scorching.

"It's amazing that all of these permits, all of these events have already sold out in quicker times than we've ever seen," Gorman told WCBS 880's Mike Xirinachs. "So we are thinking that is an indication that we are going to have a great summer."
