No one was home at the time of the crash, which happened around 12:30 a.m.

"I heard this loud bang," neighbor Harry Faustmann said. "I came running to the window. I see a cloud of smoke go over there. And my neighbor had just come home from work, and she's yelling over, 'Is anybody hurt?' And I said, 'Uh-oh!'"

Police are still searching for the driver, Newsday reported.

Faustmann said he believes something needs to be done because over the last few years drivers speeding around the curve have struck cars, telephone poles, trees and a fire hydrant.
