Prosecutor: Man Killed In Police-Involved Shooting In Hackensack

HACKENSACK, N.J. (CBSNewYork) -- A Hackensack man died Thursday after being shot during a confrontation with police at his home, authorities said.

Bergen County Prosecutor John Molinelli identified the man as Elvin Diaz, 24.

Police arrived at the house at 10 Temple Ave. around 1:30 p.m. because Diaz was on parole and probation officers wanted to check out his condition and whereabouts, CBS2's Weijia Jiang reported.

Diaz allegedly refused to drop a knife and was shot several times, 1010 WINS' Al Jones reported. Molinelli said a kitchen cleaver was recovered at the scene and that the investigation is ongoing.

Chopper 2 was above the frantic scene, where a woman believed to be Diaz's mother was visibly emotional.

"She was exhausted, it looked like," witness Nadine Karcs said. "She kept falling into police arms and was screaming, 'My son! My son!' She was very heartbroken."

Neighbors described Diaz as "quiet" and "friendly."

"I don't believe (the family had any problems). It didn't seem so to me. No, not at all. Not at all," said neighbor Mike Dembow. "I don't know what happens behind closed doors, and you know how that goes. But other than that, they seemed pretty nice to me."

Mike, who owns a pizza parlor nearby that the family frequented.

"They used to come in, the whole family all the time," he said. "And they seemed like pretty nice people to me. They were very polite. He seemed like a good kid to me."

Diaz and two officers were taken to Hackensack University Medical Center, but the officers were not injured, Jiang reported. Diaz died a few hours later, Jones reported.

Diaz served time in prison for multiple crimes, including assaulting a police officer, WCBS 880's Marla Diamond reported.
