Child Among 2 Hurt When Car Jumps Curb In Brooklyn

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Two people, including a child, were injured Monday when a car jumped a curb in Brooklyn.

The incident took place around 2:20 p.m. on Seventh Avenue between 51st and 52nd streets in Sunset Park.

As CBS2's Tracee Carrasco reported, Good Samaritans jumped into action to free the child who became stuck during the accident.

"The neighborhood actually got together and tried to pick the car up to get the child out," one man said.

The man, who asked not to be identified, was among those who rushed to help.

"He was very nervous. He was crying. Everything happened so fast. All I remember was just trying to get to the child," he said.

Both patients were rushed to Lutheran Medical Center, the boy suffered only minor cuts and bruises, police said.

Surveillance video captured the dramatic scene. The boy was walking on the sidewalk, playing with a toy, when out of nowhere the car jumped the curb. It took down a tree before running over the child.

Witnesses said the child's grandmother may have been at a shop next door. She rushed over to the car as a man helped to get the child out.

"I grabbed his head, and at the same time we moved the child slowly out until the ambulance arrived," the man said.

Once the FDNY arrived they put the boy on a stretcher and rushed him to the hospital.

Police said the driver lost control of the vehicle, before it jumped the curb.

"She came out of the car, she appeared to be distraught, like she couldn't believe that she actually hit a child," the man said.

Police said it appears there was no criminality.
