Steve Weatherford On WFAN: Life Flashed Before My Eyes During Crash

NEW YORK (WFAN) -- New York Giants punter Steve Weatherford is counting his blessings after a hellish commute to Monday's offseason workouts.

Weatherford, traveling back to East Rutherford after welcoming a newborn daughter on the West Coast, says he crashed into the median on the N.J. Turnpike during the early morning hours, totaling his rental car. But he somehow escaped without major injury and later tweeted a picture of himself at the Giants' practice facility.

Weatherford told WFAN's "Boomer & Carton" show that he hydroplaned after driving into "a pit of water" at about 65-70 mph.

"There's no way that I would make it without an intervention from God," he said. "It was unbelievable. As I'm spinning, my life is in slow motion, flashing before my eyes. It was the craziest thing to ever happen to me."

Weatherford estimated that he was out of his car for only 90 seconds before another driver spun out in the same spot, slamming into his vehicle.

"I thought the guy was dead," he said. "I sprint up to his car. I'm trying to open his door, it's bent shut. I'm trying to open the passenger door, it's bent shut. So finally, I like rip open the back-right door ... I'm trying to gently hit this guy's shoulder and trying to wake him up, because a third car could definitely, easily come and (hit) us."

Weatherford said the N.J. State Police officers who responded to the scene drove him all the way from Exit 8 to his home in Hoboken.

"This happened at like 4 o'clock in the morning," he said. "I got back to my house at like 5:15, still kind of shaky, take a shower and put on some warm, dry clothes and then I came up to work at the facility at like 6:15, had the doctors take a look at me."

He said he suffered "a bunch of bruises, cuts" and "a couple of burns on my arm and a busted lip."

"All things considered, man, (I'm) incredibly blessed," said Weatherford, who added the other driver appeared OK before being taken from the scene in a stretcher. "If it was 4 o'clock in the afternoon instead of 4 o'clock in the morning, I'm dead meat. No question."

The punter said he'd go out on the field and get some work in despite the ordeal. His teammate, tight end Larry Donnell, was on a plane that skidded off the runway at LaGuardia Airport in March.

"God saved me, and the NJ State Troopers delivered me," Weatherford wrote on Instagram. "I'm so thankful to even be walking right now."
