JERSEY CITY, N.J. (CBSNewYork) -- The search is on for the gunman who killed the son of Jersey City's fire chief.

Darcell Rivers, 35, was shot in the head and killed during an apparent robbery on Fulton Avenue around 3:45 a.m. Thursday.

The father of four was walking to his mother's house when he was robbed, CBS2 reported.

Rivers, who works in Rhode Island as a chef, was in Jersey City visiting his children -- ages 2 to 13 -- when he was killed.

Mayor Steven Fulop said his office is working with the Hudson County prosecutor on what they call "significant leads" in the case and are hoping for a quick arrest, 1010 WINS' Glenn Schuck reported.

Police are reviewing surveillance footage.

The violence has residents in the area concerned.

"It just seems like a terrible tragedy," one resident said. "It seems like Jersey City is really making progress and we want to see a lot more safety here. Hearing something like this certainly seems upsetting."

"There's some definite issues in this city, while most of it is flourishing, there's definitely parts that need a lot of work," resident Kevin Peterson said. "It's just a shame, I hope that there's something the city can organize and put together that we can help that family out."

Fulop admits crime in the south side of town is still a problem. Thirty-five new police officers graduating the academy this week will be directed to that area, Schuck reported.
