NYPD Hunts For Suspect In Alleged Attempted Rape At Gramercy Apartment Building
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Police are trying to locate a man who allegedly tried to rape a woman early Saturday morning in Manhattan.
The suspected followed the 25-year-old woman into her Gramercy apartment building around 3:30 a.m. and attempted to rape her in the vestibule, police said. She was able to fight off the man, who fled the scene.
The victim refused medical attention, police said.
Some tenants told CBS2's Hazel Sanchez they still feel safe knowing the Stuyvesant Town Security patrols the property.
"The neighborhood is pretty safe. It's much safer than it was like 10-15 years ago, definitely. I'm pretty surprised honestly that something like that happened around here," said resident Jasmine Arroyo.
But others said it serves as a wake up call.
"It's scary, definitely. It freaks me out. So I think people are making sure that the door is closing behind them," said Katie Zubrow, Stuvesant Town resident.
CBS2 reached out to Stuyvesant Town management to see if anything is being done to notify tenants about the alleged attack and to see if security will be stepped up but no one was available for comment.
The suspect is described as being black, standing about 5 feet 8 inches tall and weighing around 170 pounds. He was wearing blue jeans, white sneakers and a dark jacket with the Adidas symbol on the back and the world "Adidas" on the hood.
Cops have released surveillance images of the man.
