NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) -- The NYPD says two teens were stabbed to death about a block apart in Brooklyn.

The first stabbing happened Wednesday just before 7 p.m. inside a sneaker store on Utica Avenue.

Jamal Joseph, 18, was part of a group that attacked another shopper inside Allegiance Boutique, police said. The man pulled out a knife and stabbed Joseph in the neck, shoulder and torso, police said.

He was taken to Kings County Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The second stabbing occurred at about 11:30 p.m. about a block away on Eastern Parkway.

Police said 17-year-old John Garrett was stabbed and pronounced dead at Kings County Hospital. It wasn't clear what led to the stabbing.

"I knew him ever since I was in the third grade," a lifelong friend of the teen told 1010 WINS' Glenn Schuck. "We were about to finish high school. I lost a brother."

Police said the two incidents were not connected.  No arrests have been made.
