Police: Man Grabbed, Choked Woman On Upper West Side

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Police were searching Thursday for a suspect who allegedly sneaked up behind a woman on the Upper West Side and tried to strangle her.

Around 4:55 a.m. this past Sunday, the 23-year-old woman was walking near the Collegiate School at 260 W. 78th St. – between Broadway and West End Avenue – when the suspect came up from behind, police said.

The suspect put his arm around the woman's neck and his hand over her mouth, and began choking her, police said.

The victim fought the suspect off and he fled, police said.

Police have released surveillance video of the suspect.
