Seen At 11: Some Couples Forgo Traditional Nuptials For Extreme Weddings

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- For some brides and grooms a conventional walk down the aisle is just not enough.

As CBS2's Kristine Johnson explained, the newest trend in nuptials might have the bride in climbing gear or the groom with a scuba tank, along with their guests for the ultimate adventure wedding.

"We're sports people. We like to work out," bride Marzi Daoust said.

Brian and Marzi Daoust's Caribbean wedding had lots more in store for their guests than just white sandy beaches and the traditional 'I do.'

It's part of a new trend inviting guests to work up a sweat as part of the wedding festivities.

"All of my friends kind of lead the same lifestyle as us. So they all participated and I thank them for it," Marzi said.

Some extreme couples invite guests to come trekking in the mountains or even rappel next to a waterfall to be part of their rituals.

Spin classes, 5k races, and challenges like Tough Mudders are also backdrops for the bride and groom to tie the knot in extreme style.

"People don't want a regular wedding anymore," Laura Lukasik, Luxury Travel Adviser, Viking Travel said.

Lukasik added that these activities will not suit every guest and said participation is almost always optional.

"Grandma and grandpa, they're not going to be at the bungee jumping experience, the sky diving experience, but they could be on the ground having a nice breakfast," she explained.

As Jamie Miles of theknot.com explained, when couples share wedding photos on social media they want to make sure to show off an event that is less conventional and more cutting edge.

"And incorporating these different activities such as hiking the day of the wedding, or running to the summit of a mountain, exchanging vows, and running back down might be something you want to do because you haven't seen it before," Miles said.

As for the Daousts, they said their wedding took more work to plan, but left them with even greater memories.

"There were some people that were hesitant to participate, but once got them there, people had a lot of fun,"Daoust said.

Many of these extreme weddings don't come cheap, and depending on the activity and how many guests participate, the memorable day could be even more expensive.
