Preparations Underway On Roosevelt Island For Hillary Clinton's Campaign Speech

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) -- Preparations are underway on Roosevelt Island as Hillary Clinton makes what is being seen as her first major presidential campaign speech this weekend.

Clinton will be joined by her husband and their daughter, Chelsea, at Saturday's rally, marking the first time the family has been seen together in public since Clinton announced in April her intention to again run for the White House.

The Four Freedoms Monument to FDR's 1941 speech is no random choice, but Clinton is expected to make a pitch on Saturday to today's struggling middle class.

Thousands call Roosevelt Island home and some said they are happy to share it with Clinton, WCBS 880's Paul Murnane reported.

"If you just take a tram across, then you will discover it is much more crowded over there than here, so I'm looking forward to it," one person said.

Mayor Bill de Blasio's press secretary said the mayor will not attend Clinton's campaign kickoff.

After the speech, she'll embark on a tour of early-voting states, with events focused on her relationship with her mother, work as a young lawyer on behalf of poor children, and her father's background as a veteran and small businessman.
