Sea Cliff Mayor: Vandal Broke Into Village Hall, Left Message On Wall

SEA CLIFF, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- Someone broke into a village hall on Long Island and wrote a message across a conference room wall, officials said.

When Sea Cliff Mayor Bruce Kennedy walked into work Monday, he discovered the message scrawled out in marker, he told WCBS 880's Sophia Hall. It read: "Let us chill in parks so we don't have to chill here!!! #give respect where respect is due." The message was accompanied by a symbol of a heart and the words "sorry janitor."

The wall had to be repainted by staff members. Village Hall does not have a janitor, Kennedy said.

The mayor said the culprit pried open the window near a fire escape.

Kennedy said he believes the vandalism is in response to a recent crackdown on people hanging out in public parks after 10 p.m.

"We don't mind young people hanging out in the parks, but we do care about some of the incidents that have been going on, such as underage drinking, public pot smoking, vandalism, graffiti and littering," Kennedy said.

Police are investigating and asking anyone with information about the incident to call Crime Stoppers at 800-244-TIPS. All callers will remain anonymous.
