Officials Eye Progress, Expect First Phase Of 2nd Ave. Subway To Be Done In 2016
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- The Second Avenue subway is 83 percent completed and is supposed to be running by the end of next year.
U.S. Rep. Carolyn Maloney (D-N.Y.) pointed out that the completed date would be 87 years after the project was first proposed.
"We've been waiting for that subway ever since, and we're here to say that we are going to make sure that it's built on time," she said.
As 1010 WINS' Al Jones reported, the Metropolitan Transportation Authority is staring at a $14-billion budget hole and the feds have been talking about a 2018 completion date.

Councilman Ben Kallos (D-5th) said his constituents can't endure another delay.
"It's already a rough commute every morning and without the 2nd Ave subway it's only going to get worse," he said.
The congresswoman said delays will only add costs, cripple businesses, and put phase two into East Harlem in jeopardy.
