De Blasio: Lunar New Year To Be Added To NYC School Holidays

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Mayor Bill de Blasio announced on Twitter Monday that the Lunar New Year will be added to the city's school holiday calendar.

The mayor said in an effort to work toward "a more inclusive city," the Lunar New Year will be added to the calendar on Tuesday.

Parents and legislators have been calling on Mayor de Blasio and schools Chancellor Carmen Fariña to add the holiday to the list for some time.

In March, de Blasio announced the addition of two Muslim holidays to the calendar. When asked about the Lunar New Year at that time, the mayor said city officials were still working on it.

There has also been a push to make Diwali, the Hindu festival of lights, a holiday.
