Police: Boys Dropped Fire Extinguisher On Car Windshield In Queens

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Police were searching Monday for three boys who they believe hurled a fire extinguisher down on a vehicle outside the SkyView Center mall in Flushing, Queens.

The incident happened around 5 p.m. Tuesday, June 2, police said.

Several boys threw the fire extinguisher from an upper level and smashed the vehicle's windshield as it was entering the parking garage at the mall, at 131-07 40th Rd. in Queens, police said.

The driver was not injured, police said.

As CBS2's Valerie Castro reported, drivers who frequent the garage called video footage of the event "shocking."

"Wow, yeah that could have gone right through the windshield," Eric Scheafer said.

The garage has seven parking levels, each with a red fire extinguisher for emergencies.

It's unclear which level the extinguisher in the video was tossed from. The driver wasn't hurt, but others said the teens need to be held accountable.

"That's scary. I hope they get caught," Scheafer said.

Police said the teens face charges of criminal mischief for the crime.

One of the suspects was described as a white male between 13 and 14 years old, wearing a black long-sleeved sweater, black pants, and black sneakers.

A second was described as a white male between 12 and 13 years old, wearing a black-and-white striped T-shirt with a blue jacket wrapped around his waist, black pants and blue sneakers, and carrying a black cap.

A third was described as a black male between 12 and 13 years old, wearing a red T-shirt and black pants.

Police have released surveillance photos of three suspects, and surveillance video of the red fire extinguisher falling and landing on the vehicle.
