Suspect Charged In Fatal Crown Heights Hit-And-Run

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- The NYPD has arrested a suspect in connection with a hit-and-run crash in Brooklyn that took the life of an elderly man on Tuesday.

Janice Vargas-Cruz, 40, is charged with leaving the scene of an accident that resulted in death.

According to authorities, Vargas-Cruz is one of two drivers who struck 93-year-old Millwood Hughes around 11:15 a.m. in Crown Heights.

Witnesses said Hughes was first hit by tractor-trailer before being run over by another car.

Surveillance video shows the elderly man stepping out of his double-parked vehicle on Albany Avenue near Eastern Parkway, straight into the path of a tractor-trailer. A truck can be seen hitting him, and dragging him.

Witnesses said that what happened next was even more disturbing.

The video shows Hughes being run over and dragged a second time by another vehicle. The driver of the car then allegedly backed up and drove around his body.

Witnesses said the driver left Hughes lying in the middle of the street in desperate need of help.

Police described the tractor-trailer involved as a white Peterbilt 18-wheeler with a silver trailer. So far, that driver has not been found.
