Driver Loses Control, Crashes Car Into Bedroom Of Elderly Woman's Woodbury Home

WOODBURY, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- It was a very close call for elderly residents of a senior apartment complex on Long Island Monday.

A car careened off the road, went airborne and slammed into a bedroom at Woodbury Meadows, a senior apartment complex on Woodbury Road in Woodbury at around 9:30 a.m.

The driver, a chiroprator named Arthur Goldberg, said he was returning home from a local errand with his wife in his brand new car, when he hit something, CBS2's Carolyn Gusoff reported. The airbag deployed and Goldberg said he could not stop the car.

"We couldn't get it to stop," Goldberg said. "I think we crashed some cars over there and wound up in here."

Witnesses said they saw Goldberg hit three cars then inexplicably speed up and couldn't imagine what was wrong, Gusoff reported.

"He was driving in oncoming traffic going what felt like 80 mph," said witness Samantha Bursctyn. "I just looked and I swerved."

Goldberg and his wife were bruised but not seriously injured, Gusoff reported.

"I'm very shaken up and very nervous and I feel terrible for the person that lives there who's going to come home to this," his wife, Karen Goldberg, said.

The 86-year-old resident was at church at the time of the crash. She was escorted home to see half of her apartment in ruin and was too shaken up to comment, Gusoff reported.

Residents Gusoff spoke to were also shaken up.

"Thank God she's not home," said one woman.

"Horror. Horror," said another.

Rescue workers at first didn't know if anyone was pinned under the car and said if anyone had been in that bed, they wouldn't have made it, Gusoff reported.

Police hauled away the mangled car a short time later for a safety check.

Fire and rescue crews say it's amazing no one was more seriously injured.

At least one other driver from one of the cars hit was taken to the hospital.
