Nassau Police Seek Perp Who Shot Driver, Sent Him Plowing Into School Before He Died

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. (CBSNewYork/AP) -- Nassau County police on Thursday were investigating a homicide that also caused three children to be rushed to the hospital.

As WCBS 880's Sophia Hall reported, three children and an adult were rushed to the hospital at Hempstead Middle School Tuesday evening.

Authorities said it all began when Jonathan Wade, 45, was driving his Lexus through Hempstead around 6 p.m. Tuesday. He witnessed a disturbance and called 911, authorities said.

When he circled around the block, someone fired several shots at him, striking Wade and his 2001 Lexus.

He was able to drive a short distance farther, but crashed into a fence and then into bleachers at the school, police said.

Three children – ages 4, 8 and 12 – were on the bleachers, police said.

Fortunately, all three children suffered non-life-threatening injuries. The 4-year-old suffered a broken leg.

Wade, however, was pronounced dead about two hours later.

Police did not provide any details about the nature of the disturbance that led to his shooting. No arrests have been made.

Anyone with information was asked to call local Crime Stoppers.
