Man Suffers Serious Injuries In Brooklyn After Becoming Engulfed In Flames

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- A Queens man was badly burned overnight in Brooklyn's Fort Greene Park.

As 1010 WINS' Glenn Schuck reported, it was an alarming scene for residents in the neighborhood who, around 12:30 a.m. Friday, heard shrilling screams from the park.

"Someone was screaming 'Help! Help! This guy's on fire. I need help!' So I looked out the window and what I did see was a guy totally engulfed in flames coming from the park into the middle of the street," said Johnathan. "So I grabbed a blanket and ran outside, and helped put the fire out."

The victim is a 36-year-old man from Queens, Schuck reported. He suffered burns on at least 60 percent of his body.

Sources told 1010 WINS the man was a seasonal parks employee.

Now, police are trying to figure out if the man was attacked, if it was an accident or if the man set himself on fire, Schuck reported.

Police told 1010 WINS they found a cup with an odor of what appears to be gasoline near the scene.
