NYPD Steps Up Patrols For Illegal Fireworks Across New York City

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- The NYPD is stepping up its enforcement of the city's ban on fireworks as Fourth of July celebrations get underway.

As WCBS 880's Marla Diamond reported, the police department is urging New Yorkers to let the professionals handle the rockets' red glare.

Chief of Patrol Carlos Gomez said more boots will be on the ground and eyes in the sky.

"We'll be deploying a little more than 100 enforcement/confiscation teams," he said.

And 50 cameras will be installed in areas where fireworks have been set off in the past, Diamond reported.

"We're supplementing the cameras; we will utilize light towers, 45 light towers to light up areas," Gomez said.

While fireworks remain illegal in New York City, small fireworks are now being sold in many parts of the state, including Putnam County.
