Teen Arrested In Shooting At July 4 Barbecue In Brooklyn

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) -- A 15-year-old boy bicycled up to a Fourth of July barbecue in a New York City park and fired at the gathering, shooting a 63-year-old man, police said.

The NYPD said Sunday the man was hospitalized in stable condition. Tyrone Whidbee has been arrested on attempted murder and assault charges.

It's unclear whether he has a lawyer who can comment on the charges. No phone number for Whidbee was immediately found.

The shooting happened around 6:30 p.m. Saturday in Brooklyn's Clinton Hill area behind P.S. 59 William Floyd Elementary School.

Whidbee fled when Officer Alfonso LaRue approached him, police said. With LaRue chasing on foot, his partner followed in their car and blocked the teen's path.

Police said they saw the teen throw a gun down and an eyewitness identified him as the gunman.

A semi-automatic .380 caliber PMK gun was recovered, police said.
