Kirk Nieuwenhuis Doubles In Return To Mets; Ceciliani Demoted

SAN FRANCISCO (CBSNewYork/AP) — The New York Mets are giving Kirk Nieuwenhuis another shot, calling him up from Triple-A Las Vegas and optioning fellow outfielder Darrell Ceciliani to their top farm club.

He returns to the Mets after they traded him to the Los Angeles Angels for cash on May 27. In 10 games with the Angels, Nieuwenhuis batted .136 (3 for 22) with two doubles before getting designated for assignment on June 10.

Three days later, the Mets claimed Nieuwenhuis and sent him to the minors. He was hitting .293 with seven homers and 20 RBIs in 15 games with the 51s.

"It was kind of like a weird dream," Nieuwenhuis said Monday, according to the Mets' official website.

Nieuwenhuis started in left field Monday night against San Francisco. He went 1 for 2 with a double, two walks and a run in the 3-0 win.

Nieuwenhuis was on the Mets' opening-day roster and batted .079 in 27 games before he was designated for assignment May 19.

"He went down and swung the bat kind of like we knew he would after getting some consistent at-bats," manager Terry Collins said. "Hopefully, he can give us some offense."

Ceciliani was hitting .206 with a homer, three RBIs and five stolen bases.
