Kenyon Martin Feels Badly For Carmelo, Says He Doesn't Deserve To Be Part Of Rebuild

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- The Knicks went a franchise-worst 17-65 last season.

They're currently in a rebuilding phase and appear to be on the upswing, but 2015-16 will likely be another transitional season for the 'Bockers.

Kenyon Martin, who played with Knicks star Carmelo Anthony in Denver from 2004-11 and in New York in 2013 and 2014, feels sorry for the face of the franchise.

"I feel bad for him," Martin said, according to ESPN. "He cares and wants to win, and to be put in a situation like that with that kind of talent, he don't deserve to be a part of a rebuilding process by any stretch of the imagination."

The Knicks didn't add any big-name free agents this offseason and had the fourth pick in the draft -- selecting Kristaps Porzingis -- despite finishing with the second-worst record in the NBA.

Team President Phil Jackson signed Arron Afflalo, Robin Lopez, Derrick Williams and Kyle O'Quinn. They should unquestionably help, but to expect them to turn the franchise into a contender is unrealistic.

Last year was Anthony's first of a five-year, $124 million contract he signed in July of 2014.

Anthony, 31, played just 40 games for New York last season due to injury. In 35.7 minutes per game, the eight-time All-Star averaged 24.2 points, 3.1 assists and 6.6 rebounds.
