Suffolk County Officers Hailed As Heroes After Delivering Baby Girl

MEDFORD, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) — Two Suffolk County police officers are being hailed as heroes after they helped deliver a baby girl who had become wrapped in her umbilical cord.

Officers James Caporale and Paul Rocchio responded to a 911 call at approximately 7:15 a.m. at a home on Southaven Avenue in Medford.

When the officers arrived, they found a 37-year-old Ana Yanes-Moran in active labor, CBS2's Dana Tyler reported. The officers assisted her in delivering a healthy baby girl -- Elizabeth Sophia.

"The mother and father were caught off guard," Officer Rocchio said. "The delivery came very fast and they weren't prepared for it."

Even more alarming, the umbilical cord was wrapped around the baby's shoulders.

"We had to act quickly," Caporale said. "We wanted to get the baby out and make sure the child was breathing -- make sure the cord wasn't in a dangerous position."

Even after the officers delivered the child, there were some tense moments as they had to tap on the baby's back to get her to cry.

"There was a little bit of concern," Caporale said. "But once we heard the baby crying, it was a big sigh of relief."

It's not the first time the mother has needed help from the police bringing a child into the world. The mother said she went through the same thing with an older child a few years ago.

Yanes-Moran can now only smile with relief from inside Stony Brook Hospital as she cradled her new bundle of joy.

Both mother and daughter are healthy and are expected to leave the hospital Tuesday.
