Mets Prospect Conforto On Call-Up Rumors: 'That's Awesome'

NEW YORK (WFAN) -- New York Mets prospect Michael Conforto is aware -- how could he not be? -- that his major league debut may come as early as Thursday.

But until he gets the call, the 22-year-old outfielder says his focus will remain on his current assignment at Double-A Binghamton.

"It's cool to hear everything that's going on, my name being thrown around. That's awesome," Conforto told SNY on Tuesday. "I let my self be excited about it. But at the same time, I try not to go over the top with it. I'm here, and I have a job to do here."

The offensively challenged Mets are indeed considering a promotion for Conforto, according to WFAN and CBSSports.com baseball insider Jon Heyman. WFAN's Ed Coleman reported on Tuesday that team brass discussed Conforto during a recent conference call, and it's "50-50" on whether they'll bring up the Eastern League Player of the Week, who would replace ailing left fielder Michael Cuddyer (knee).

If Cuddyer lands on the disabled list, Conforto could debut in Thursday's series opener at home against the Los Angeles Dodgers, the New York Daily News reported.

"I don't have any control over it," Conforto said. "I just try to improve every day while I'm here and do the best I can to help the team win."

Conforto, the 10th overall pick in last year's draft, is the 12th-ranked prospect in baseball, according to ESPN's Keith Law.

He's batting .317 with five home runs, 12 doubles and 25 RBIs in 43 Double-A games.

"I don't think it affects this kid long-term if he doesn't pan out here in the next couple of weeks," Coleman told WFAN host Mike Francesa. "I think he's confident enough to realize that he can hit and make it on this level -- and he will. He'll be, I think, a very good hitter here for a number of years."
