Bellmawr Man Is New Jersey's First Confirmed West Nile Virus Case

BELLMAWR, N.J. (CBSNewYork/AP) -- A man in New Jersey is the state's first official case of West Nile virus this year, health officials confirmed.

They say the 60-year-old Bellmawr man was admitted to a hospital on July 12 with symptoms that had started at the end of June.

He was released from the hospital five days later and continues to recuperate at home. The man's name has not been released.

The virus is transferred to humans through mosquitoes that have also fed on birds infected with West Nile, and officials say symptoms can be especially severe in individuals over 50 years old.

It's recommended that all residents use mosquito repellent and be vigilant if they are outdoors during peak times for mosquitoes, such as dawn and dusk.
