Police: Parents Left Young Daughters Inside SUV While Gambling At Resorts World Casino

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- A Brooklyn mother and father are accused of gambling with the lives of their 6-year-old and 8-year-old daughters.

As 1010 WINS' Roger Stern reported, police said Maria Loha, 33, and Segundo Japa, 34, were inside gambling at the Resorts World Casino in Jamaica, Queens while outside in the parking lot the two girls were sitting by themselves in the family SUV.

Authorities said the girls were in the SUV for over an hour before security guards called police around midnight, WCBS 880's Sophia Hall reported.

Police then let the girls, ages 6 and 8, out of the vehicle and identified their parents to the officers, Hall reported.

"How do you do something like that your child," Ozone Park resident Yaseena Tulsi told CBS2's Dave Carlin. "You are supposed to be with them 24 seven to keep them safe -- you don't leave them in the car."

The sisters were examined by doctors at Jamaica Hospital and they checked out okay. They are now in the custody of child protective services

Loha and Japa were arrested and have been charged with acting in a manner injurious to a child.
