Newark To Offer Support Centers For 'One Newark' Student Enrollment

NEWARK, N.J. (CBSNewYork/AP) -- Newark's mayor is taking steps to make the school enrollment process smoother after problems last year.

Mayor Ras Baraka said it's clear that the "One Newark'' enrollment system isn't working, but until schools are placed back under local control, the city has set up enrollment assistance sites across the city, 1010 WINS' Rebecca Granet reported.

"In order to kind of help people get through the hardship of the One Newark process that's been very difficult and cumbersome for a lot of Newark residents," Baraka said.

Newark's schools have been under state control for decades.

Baraka said Wednesday the city will open five support centers directed at families whose children haven't been enrolled yet or who had special needs. Though the mayor also said he expects families dissatisfied with their assignments to show up as well.

"We're going to be proactive and try to set up opportunities for parents to help their children and families out," Baraka said.

According to the mayor, the Education Law Center believes local control can be returned to Newark by next summer, Granet reported.
