Mets Place Reliever Parnell On 15-Day Disabled List With Shoulder Tendinitis

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Bobby Parnell has not been the same pitcher since opening day of 2014 -- and now he's back on the disabled list.

The veteran right-hander has struggled since returning from Tommy John surgery, which he had done after suffering an elbow injury on opening day of last season.

Parnell finally returned to the Mets on June 13, but has pitched to a 5.59 ERA in 23 appearances, spanning 19 1/3 innings. Parnell was tagged with a pair of losses against the Pittsburgh Pirates over the weekend, allowing a combined six runs -- four earned -- in just two-thirds of an inning.

The Mets placed their former closer back on the disabled list Tuesday, this time with right shoulder tendinitis. Logan Verrett was recalled from Triple-A Las Vegas to take Parnell's spot on the roster.

Owners of a 4 1/2-game lead atop the NL East, the Mets have successfully navigated their way around bullpen problems. Left-hander Jerry Blevins broke his pitching arm on a comebacker back in April only to re-break it on Aug. 3. He's presumed to be out for the season. In addition, right-hander Jenrry Mejia, back only a few weeks after serving an 80-game suspension for use of performance-enhancing drugs, was suspended for 162 games on July 28 for failing another test.

Verrett, a 25-year-old right-hander, was 4-2 with a 3.57 ERA in 16 appearances, including nine starts, for Las Vegas.
