Police Locate Family Of Baby Found Locked In Hotel Safe In Niagara Falls

NIAGARA FALLS, Ontario (CBSNewYork) -- Police have located the family of a baby who was rescued by hotel staff after being locked in a room safe in Niagara Falls.

The family contacted police around 7 p.m. Wednesday from Markham, Ontario where they were staying with friends, authorities said.

Police had been looking for the family, who were vacationing in Niagara Falls, since the incident happened on Tuesday at a Howard Johnson Hotel.

The panicked parents alerted hotel cleaning staff that their baby was locked in the safe in their room. A maintenance worker came into the room and was able to unlock the safe, where the child was alert and crying, police said.

Once out of the safe, the parents took the child and left the hotel before police could be called, authorities said.

Police had said the room was registered to a person from Brooklyn, but that the license plate of a Ford passenger van associated with the family was from New Jersey.

After speaking with the family on Wednesday, police said it appeared the young child was "accidentally locked inside the safe during a game of hide and seek between siblings."

They said the family had no idea their story had gotten so much media attention and were very cooperative with investigators.

Police said the baby was in good health and the investigation is now closed.
