NJ Girl Helps Fund Sandy Relief With Lemonade Stand

LAVALLETTE, N.J. (CBSNewYork) -- One New Jersey girl has turned her summer hobby into a business, and she's donating the money she makes to Superstorm Sandy recovery efforts at the shore.

Lava Lemonade is made of fresh squeezed lemons, a homemade simple syrup, and filtered water.

The product is the brain child of Isabella Paone, who started a lemonade stand with the recipe when she was 7.

"It really just started as a hobby; something to do when I was bored," she told CBS2's Elise Finch.

After Hurricane Sandy, the Morris County resident wanted to use her beverage to do some good in Lavallette, the beach community that her and her family call home each summer. She recruited her siblings and friends to expand.

Each day they make, bottle, and use their bikes to deliver Lava Lemonade to a handful of local businesses. At the end of the summer the proceeds will be donated to the Lavallette Beach Patrol.

"They are the lifeguards and badge checkers. They help to keep the beach safe. They keep it an alcohol-free and kid-friendly environment," Paone said.

"It gives me a sense of responsibility because it's a lot of work, it also helps me to understand the purpose of a business and how to manage money," Kylie Glodek said.

The proceeds from Lava Lemonade will go to the Lavallette Beach Patrol to help them replace the equipment that was destroyed during Hurricane Sandy.

"The water came over the dunes, took everything with it," said Lavallette Beach Patrol Captain Robert Tormollan.

The business owners who help them sell the product, and customers who buy it say they're impressed.

"After we tasted the lemonade it was an easy decision to get behind them and partner up," Darren Monroe of Cafe Diem said.

"It's fantastic to know that I wanted a drink, and I'm helping someone else out," Jessica Katon said.

The young entrepreneurs have sponsored a board on Lavallette's rebuilt boardwalk and donated $350 to the beach patrol. They plan on donating $1,000 to the beach patrol over the weekend.

Lava Lemonade sells for $10 a gallon.

You can also get it by the glass when the girls work their lemonade stand each Sunday until Labor Day.
