Grilled Cheese Truck Takes Home Top Prize At Annual NYC Food Truck Competition

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) -- A new king of food trucks has been crowned in New York City.

More than 2,000 people gathered Saturday on Governors Island for the annual Vendy Awards.

Grilled-cheese food truck Snowday took home the coveted Vendy Cup.

The mobile eatery specializes in grilled cheese sandwiches with a touch of maple syrup using ingredients from New York farms. Snowday's proceeds go to help formerly incarcerated youths.

The Vendy Awards are sponsored by the Street Vendor Project. Eight food experts are tasked with voting on a half-dozen Vendy categories, including Best Market Vendor, which went to Home Frites.

Vendy's Rookie of the Year went to Coney Shack Tacos, Best Dessert to Doughnuttery, Best Street Drink to Renegade Lemonade, and Snowday also took home the People's Choice award.

The Street Vendor Project at the Urban Justice Center provides advocacy and legal services to vendors.
