Officials: Bike Thrown Onto Tracks Disables Metro-North Train Near Fordham Station

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) - A bike thrown onto the tracks from an overpass disabled a Metro-North train Monday, officials said.

The incident took place around noon on the southbound tracks near the Fordham station.

As CBS2's Matt Kozar reported, the MTA said someone tossed the bike from the 188th Street overpass. A train leaving the Fordham station for Grand Central Terminal smashed into it causing damage to the third rail.

Passengers Elena Marcano and Charlotte Murray-Douglass said everyone exited onto the platform through the last car.

"He was traveling back on the train. I was afraid. It was very risky," Marcano said.

"We did not know what was happening out there because all we heard was the announcement," Murray-Douglass added.

The MTA said no passengers were hurt, but the train's engineer called for medical assistance. He walked with EMTs to an FDNY ambulance, but did not appear to be seriously hurt.

As crews worked to repair the third rail commuters crossed a metal bridge to enter and exit all southbound trains.

The MTA said track vandalism is unacceptable and MTA Police are working to catch the perpetrators. The past year has seen a slew of vandalism on the tracks.

In April, police said a gang of vandals caused an electrical explosion on a Brooklyn subway line after putting a piece of metal on the tracks.

When the train ran over the metal piece it caused sparks and triggered the train's emergency brakes.

At the Fordham station riders were unnerved about what happened, but said they generally feel safe while riding the rails.

"I've never seen anything that would interrupt my ride or else I wouldn't have hopped on the train," one passenger said.

The incident caused some residual delays which have since cleared up. The MTA apologized to customers for any inconvenience.
