NYPD: Man Tries To Rape Woman After Offering To Buy Her Soda, Cigarettes In Brooklyn

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- A man tried to cut off a woman's clothes and rape her after offering to buy her soda and cigarettes in Brooklyn early Tuesday morning, police said.

The 45-year-old woman was sitting on a bench in front of 143 Smith St. when the suspect walked up to her and started talking to her around 5 a.m., police said.

They walked together to a Rite Aid store a few blocks away after he offered to buy her the items. After leaving the store, police said the suspect attacked the woman, trying to choke her with a black video cord and cut off her clothes with a knife.

He ran off after the victim started screaming.

The suspect is about 5'4" tall, approximately 30 years of age, and was last seen wearing a black leather vest with studs on the back, a light colored shirt, dark colored jeans and black cowboy boots.

Police have released surveillance video of the suspect walking into the Rite Aid store.
