Queens Dad Upset Over School Bus Service For Autistic Son

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- The father of an autistic boy is raising complaints about school bus service in Queens.

First grader Colin Erdey is supposed to be bussed daily to PS/MS 219. Classes are now in their second week, but the boy's father claims the 6-year-old has yet to take the bus to school this year.

Richard Erdey of College Point said that's because the bus either never shows up or arrives at the house late.

"The only time they actually made it to my house, and it wasn't even on time, was Wednesday  after I complained to the office of public transportation," he told 1010 WINS' Carol D'Auria.

That day, Colin got a ride to school from his mother so he wouldn't be late for class.

Erdey said he also knows of another bus that dropped off students at the school more than two hours late.

"I was talking to one parent that was in my class, they called the police looking for the bus and the bus showed up at 10:10," he said.

Erdey claims the bus driver has also failed to collect the emergency card which lists contact numbers in the event of an accident.

"He's never asked for an emergency card," Erdey said.

And apparently he's not alone.

"I asked the other parent 'Did he ask you for an emergency card?' he goes, 'No, I haven't given him one yet,'" Erdey said. "Where's the accountability for children?"

1010 WINS is awaiting a response from the Department of Education.
