Union City, NJ Residents Buzzing With Excitement Over Pope Francis' NYC Visit

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- It's not only New Yorkers who are anxiously awaiting Pope Francis' visit.

The faithful in New Jersey are also prepping for the historic papal visit.

For Cuban-born Nelson Terrero who now lives in Union City, aka Little Havana, the Pope's visit means a lot, WCBS 880's Jim Smith reported.

"It is extremely historic. I never thought it would ever happen."

Terrero said family members back in Cuba are buzzing with excitement.

"My whole family is Catholic and they are definitely trying to get there and see the Pope. They are very happy."

Many said they hope the trip leads to a more open government with more freedom.

However, there are skeptics in the community, Smith reported.

"I don't think the Cuban brothers listen to the Pope. They couldn't care less. They are the ones that rule over there."

Pope Francis will be in New York City Thursday Sept. 24 to Saturday, Sept. 26.
