Students At 'Our Lady Queen Of Angels' In Harlem Prepare To Meet The Pope

NEW YORK(CBSNewYork) -- Local students have been getting ready for Pope Francis' visit to New York.

When the planning began for the Pope's trip to New York he made it known that he wanted to get an up close look at an inner city Catholic school.

The Pope will visit Our Lady Queen of Angels grammar school on East 112th Street.

The twenty-four third and fourth graders practiced the song they will sing for the Pope and brushed up on their prayers on Wednesday.

As WCBS-880's Jim Smith reported, Kelis Williams was brimming with excitement.

"I think it's fun because it's a one-time opportunity," she said.

Kayla Osborne was gearing up for the big moment.

"I think that it is a great chance to meet the Pope," she said.

The children have made homemade art projects for the Pope with themes ranging from religion, recycling, and community service, to being thankful.

One fourth grader worked on a project depicting a modern school that would have a green roof.

"This is the greenhouse where the water is, this is the compost pipe so that we can make new plants," she told 1010 WINS' Carol D'Auria.

Climate change is one of the Pope's favorite issues.
