Cuomo Eulogizes Aide Killed After Shooting Before West Indian Day Parade
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) -- Gov. Andrew Cuomo delivered the eulogy on Saturday for an aide who was killed in the crossfire between two gangs hours before the West Indian Day parade.
The funeral for Carey Gabay was held in Brooklyn. Cuomo said Gabay's death was a pointless example of rampant violence.
"Carey's life and death were not in vain, but a powerful message that has touched thousands in this city, state and nation," Cuomo said. "The message is clear: Carey's life and Carey's death are a telling story with a timely message and a call to action."
The 43-year-old Harvard-educated lawyer served as first deputy general counsel at the Empire State Development Corp.
He was shot in the head during a predawn party celebrating the parade Sept. 7. Gabay was walking with his brother near the Brooklyn parade route at 3:40 a.m. when he was shot. He died Sept. 15.
Police have not arrested anyone for Gabay's death. Police have released video and a sketch of a man wanted for questioning.
The shooting was one of several outbursts of violence in the neighborhoods surrounding the parade.
