Staten Island Ferry Riders Test Seats For New Fleet

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- City officials are asking Staten Island Ferry riders for help in picking out new seats for the next fleet of ferries.

Three different seat styles are now on display at Whitehall Terminal in Lower Manhattan and commuters are getting a chance to try them out.

As WCBS-880's Rich Lamb reported, it's a novel concept from DOT Commissioner Polly Trottenberg.

"The public, our riding public, gets a chance to weigh in on some of the features and particularly we thought for seats, it would be nice to put some models up. They're in Whitehall. We're inviting riders to come take a look, test them out and you can go on to our website and give us your opinion," she said.

Most riders thought the news seats were a big improvement.

"I think it's comfortable and the fact that it rocks is OK because the boat rocks when the water is choppy," Andy Borreo of Manhattan said of one of the choices.

"You get a little arch in your back, it feels like you have great posture, it feels good," Bryant Pearson of Staten Island said of another.

The next class of Staten Island Ferry boats are set to arrive in 2019.
