ME Rules Homicide For Death Of Woman Who Had Silicone Injection In Buttocks

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) -- The death of a Maryland woman who had silicone injected into her buttocks has been ruled a homicide, the New York City Medical Examiner's office announced Wednesday.

A spokeswoman said Kelly Mayhew, 34, died from undissolved material carried by the blood after the injections.

Police said the Suitland, Maryland, resident was found unresponsive at an apartment on Dickens Street in Far, Rockaway, Queens May 30.

Her mother performed CPR and called 911, but Mayhew didn't survive.

Authorities on Wednesday were still looking for the woman suspected of giving Mayhew the injection.

More than a dozen people in the United States have died from the illicit injections. A Philadelphia woman was convicted of murder in March for injecting low-grade silicone into a woman's buttocks at an airport hotel room. The substance traveled to her lungs and killed her.
