Pilot Reports Seeing Another Drone Near LaGuardia Airport

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Another drone has been spotted at LaGuardia Airport.

A pilot on American Airlines Flight 1413 reported seeing the drone just after takeoff around 1 p.m., CBS2's Sonia Rincon reported.

Air traffic control then put out a warning saying, "Use caution for a drone reported about five minutes ago."

The pilot did not have to take any evasive action and continued on to Miami. But passengers say such incidents are happening too frequently.

"I know a lot of people like to use them for recreation, but I think there needs to be some sort of rules or restrictions around airports," said Gary Cruse, a passenger at LaGuardia on Thursday. "We live pretty close to DFW (Dallas/Forth Worth) Airport, so we've had a few of those incidents as well."

"I would feel frightened if I knew that was close by where we were, so I'm glad we didn't know about it as we flew in," said Lucille Helton, another passenger.

"I think it's a new way to use technology. I think that's a good thing," said passenger Lori Jolley. "Just have to put some parameters around it."

Sen. Charles Schumer, D-N.Y., has introduced legislation that would require geofencing technology in drones made and sold in the U.S. It would keep the remote-controlled aircraft away from airports and major events.

The Federal Aviation Administration has investigated more than 600 drone sightings near airports this year.
