'Waitress' Musical Starring Tony Winner Jessie Mueller To Open On Broadway In April

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- The Great White Way is about to get a lot brighter.

Tony award-winning actress Jessie Mueller will be starring as Jenna in "Waitress," the musical adaptation of the 2007 film of the same name written by the late Adrienne Shelley.

"Waitress'' features an original score by Grammy-nominee Sara Bareilles, including the newly-released single "She Used To Be Mine."

Bareilles is best known for her hits "Brave' and "Love Song.''

Mueller won the best leading actress in a musical Tony last year for her portrayal of singer/songwriter Carole King in the hit musical "Beautiful.''

"Waitress" will begin previews beginning at the Brooks Atkinson Theatre March 25. Opening night is April 24.

It will be directed by Diane Paulus, who has also helmed the recent revival of "Pippin'' and "Finding Neverland.''

"Waitress" made its world premiere at the American Repertory Theater in Cambridge, Mass. The last performance was Sept. 27.

"Waitress,''tells the story of Jenna Hunterson, a waitress and expert pie maker trapped in a small-town diner and a loveless marriage. Actress Keri Russell starred in the film.

The musical has a story by Jessie Nelson, who wrote, directed and produced "Corrina, Corrina'' with Whoopi Goldberg and "I Am Sam'' with Sean Penn.

Mueller's other Broadway credits include "On a Clear Day You Can See Forever'' with Harry Connick Jr., "The Mystery of Edwin Drood'' and "Nice Work If You Can Get It.''
