Woman Dead, Child And 3 Others Hurt When SUV Hits Pedestrians In Richmond Hill, Queens
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Three people were struck by a vehicle on a sidewalk in Richmond Hill, Queens late Tuesday afternoon, and one was killed.
As CBS2's Dave Carlin reported, police said around 5:45 p.m., two vehicles collided at 108th Street and Atlantic Avenue in Queens.
A 43-year-old woman driving a white sport-utility vehicle had run a red light at 108th Street, police said. Her vehicle was struck by a black Kia being driven by a 23-year-old woman, which was headed north on 108th Street, police said.
The SUV ended up on the sidewalk – where three people were struck, police said.
One of the victims, a 52-year-old woman, was pronounced dead following the accident, police said. A 2-year-old girl was also struck and was reported in critical, but stable condition, police said.
A 58-year-old woman and the two drivers were also hospitalized. Their condition as reported as stable, police said.
Miriam Sierra said she saw the moment of impact.
"What I seen, what I seen was terrible," she said.
Sierra said she saw the woman who would later die of her injuries try desperately and safely to get the child out of the way of the SUV.
"I seen her when she threw the baby," she said.
The victims were taken to Jamaica Hospital Medical Center, and North Shore-LIJ Long Island Jewish Medical Center in New Hyde Park, police said.
"The little girl was crying; she was bruised up," said witness Norman Alsaida. "The older woman had tire marks over her stomach, and a lot of scratches on her face and legs."
Alsaida said he was just one car behind the accident and saw it all.
"I seen the little girl, like, under the car, and right after that hit, the other woman hit the wall of the building and stopped after that," he said.
The NYPD Collision Investigation Squad was investigating.
