Suffolk Man Accused Of DWI In Crash That Killed Pedestrian
SMITHTOWN, N.Y. (CBSNewYork/AP) -- A Long Island man has been arrested for alleged drunken driving after he struck and killed a pedestrian, police said.
The crash happened at 8:30 p.m. Friday in Smithtown.
Suffolk County police said St. James resident Timothy Burke, 43, was driving north on Route 111 when he hit a pedestrian crossing the road.
The pedestrian, 51-year-old Kenneth Rich, of Smithtown, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Burke was charged with driving while intoxicated and was scheduled to be arraigned Saturday in First District Court in Central Islip.
The vehicle was impounded for a safety check and the investigation is ongoing, police said.
