Newark Woman Convicted Of Animal Cruelty For Death Of Neighbor's Dog

NEWARK, N.J. (CBSNewYork/AP) -- A woman accused of causing the death of her neighbor's Shih Tzu by throwing it into traffic during an argument over a parking space was convicted of animal cruelty and two other charges Tuesday.

The Essex County jury, however, could not come to a verdict on a burglary charge against Haniyyah Barnes.

Prosecutors allege Barnes kicked in the front door of her neighbor's home in August 2011, grabbed the 2-year-old Shih Tzu named Honey Bey and tossed the dog into oncoming traffic, where she was struck by a car and killed.

The partial verdict came after the jury had deliberated for three days. Along with animal cruelty, the 28-year-old was convicted of theft and criminal mischief.

Prosecutors said they plan to retry Barnes on the burglary charge.

Barnes faces up to five years in prison when she's sentenced later this year.
