Windsor Terrace Residents Say Neighborhood Park Is Overrun With Sex, Drugs

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Anger has erupted in Windsor Terrace, Brooklyn, over adult activity near a local park.

As CBS2's Valerie Castro reported, residents said they have had enough of the sex and drugs right near their doorsteps. They said the bad behavior has gone on for far too long, and they have noticed an increase over the last six months.

"I came home to see a sex act right in the middle of the park," said Yolanda Treyman. "It makes me feel very angry."

Treyman is tired of the illicit activity that happens by her home, along a stretch of East 5th Street near Vanderbilt Street.

"We have drugs, sex -- all we need is rock and roll," Treyman said.

She said a small park in the area has become a haven for drug use. Other residents said the dimly-lit street attracts active adult couples who pull over to the side of the road.

"They're not just sitting reading the newspaper," said Andrew Danylchuk of Windsor Terrace. "It's sexual activity -- it's pretty obvious."

Danylchuk said he witnessed it firsthand.

"There was a couple right in front of my house, doing what they were doing, and I asked them to please leave," Danylchuk said, "and the male occupant threw a beer bottle at me."

Condom wrappers litter the ground in the area. And while CBS2 was there, a black car pulled over and both the driver and passenger appeared to be smoking marijuana. They were seen blowing smoke out the window in broad daylight.

CBS2's Castro and her crew also found what appeared to be the butt of a marijuana blunt on the ground after the car pulled away. Residents said they often find evidence of drug use in this area on a regular basis.

"You can smell the marijuana and you see the needles from the heroin use," Danylchuk said.

Residents have complained to the NYPD. The captain from the 72nd Precinct showed up while CBS2 was there to address residents' concerns.

"I appreciate the cops," Treyman said. "I just want them to be more active in the neighborhood, that's all."

The NYPD confirmed it is stepping up patrols in the area. Residents said they also believe a community garden inside the park might make a difference.
