Report: Despite Daniel Murphy's Heroics, Mets Are Unlikely To Re-Sign Him

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Daniel Murphy is the talk of the town.

The 30-year-old, who debuted with the Mets in 2008, has been the star of the MLB playoffs thus far. In seven postseason games entering Game 3 of the National League Championship Series against the Cubs, Murphy is batting .357 (10-for-28) with five home runs, eight RBIs, a double and a stolen base.

He's gone deep off star pitchers Clayton Kershaw (twice), Zack Greinke, Jon Lester and Jake Arrieta.

But despite his heroics on the sport's biggest stage, there's a very good chance that the free-agent-to-be won't be a Met in 2016.

Two team sources have told the New York Daily News that the second baseman is not in the organization's plans moving forward.

KEIDEL: THE METS MUST PAY MURPHY

"He's been great, really great," one source told the newspaper, "but it changes nothing."

The club is very high on 21-year-old second baseman Dilson Herrera, the New York Daily News reports, and Wilmer Flores -- currently playing shortstop -- is another option at second.

"If they are keeping their payroll in the same neighborhood, they can't afford to keep him," one unnamed general manager told the newspaper. "He's making $8 million now. (He) will probably get a bump on that and he's going to want some years.

"They already have all that money invested in Juan Lagares and Michael Cuddyer, who are both backups now. You can't keep your payroll under control like that."

Murphy is a terrific hitter, but he's struggled defensively and on the bases in recent years.

Last week on WFAN, SNY Mets broadcaster Gary Cohen told Joe Benigno and Evan Roberts that he has "no interest" in the Mets re-signing Murphy, and he doesn't think the team has a desire to bring him back.

In 130 regular-season games in 2015, Murphy hit .281 with 14 home runs and 73 RBIs. He committed 13 errors in the field.
