Prosecutors: Woman Slain In Midland Park; Former Cop Suspect Throws Self In Front Of Train

MIDLAND PARK, N.J. (CBSNewYork) -- A former NYPD officer was in custody late Thursday after he allegedly threw himself in front of a subway train, following the stabbing death of his girlfriend in Midland Park, New Jersey.

Arthur J. Lomando of Centereach, Long Island, had been wanted in the stabbing that killed Suzanne Bardzell, 48, according to Bergen County Prosecutor John Molinelli.

Prosecutors told CBS2 Lomando was a former NYPD officer.

Bardzell was found dead with stab wounds in her driveway at 715 Godwin Ave. in Midland Park Thursday afternoon, prosecutors said.

Bardzell had pulled into her residence a short time earlier, and her car was still running when police found her, Bergen County Prosecutor John Molinelli told 1010 WINS.

Police identified Arthur J. Lomando of Centereach, Long Island as the suspect in the stabbing, Molinelli said. Prosecutors have issued a warning charging him with murder, possession of a weapon for unlawful purposes, and violation of a restraining order, Molinelli said.

He said the motive was believed to be related to domestic violence.

"There's a history of domestic violence between – they were in a dating relationship for three years, and it looked like for the entire three years, there had been some instance of violence between them. But most recently in early October, Ms. Barzdell did make application to court and had a restraining order issued against Mr. Lomando," Molinelli said.

Late Thursday, Lomando threw himself in front of a subway train at St. Nicholas and Amsterdam avenues in Upper Manhattan, Molinelli said on Twitter.

The 163rd Street/Amsterdam Avenue stop, serving the C Train, is located at the intersection. There were no reports of delays on the C Train late Thursday.

Lomando survived and was taken to Harlem Hospital Center, where he was in custody, Molinelli said.
