Mamaroneck Finds Solution For Residents' Metro-North Parking Problem
MAMARONECK, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- One Westchester County town is looking to ease the parking congestion at a crowded Metro-North station.
With railroad ridership up, commuters are snatching parking spaces near train stations, leaving residents in the lurch, WCBS 880's Sean Adams reported.
But there is some relief on the way for residents in Mamaroneck after state lawmakers approved a new residential parking permit system.
Mayor Norman Rosenblum said "it's not tough, it's literally impossible" for village residents to get a spot near the train station.
"People come, and they will park. They will leave their car all day long," Rosenblum said. "We now have the authority to address that problem."
Details are still being worked out, but residents will be able to purchase a special permit, which would allow them to exceed time limits around a 17-block area within a four-block radius of the train station, Adams reported.
"It'll help people enjoy their own homes," Rosenblum said. "Mamaroneck welcomes everybody to the village, but you also have the responsibility to make sure that you take care of residents."
Rosenblum said he would also like to create additional parking for commuters.
