Mets Fans Show Off Their Pride At Home And In Kansas City

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (CBSNewYork) -- New Yorkers have flocked to Kansas City to watch their beloved Mets take on the Royals in Game 1 of the World Series.

CBS2's Meg Baker caught up with the Loggies -- three generations of Mets fans from Brooklyn who flew out to Missouri to watch their favorite team.

"We're here to root on a great team," Jim Loggies said. "I gave my heart for that team."

Jim has followed the team all of his life, but has never been to a World Series game.

"I started with the Dodgers, and when they left it broke my heart; when the Mets came in it was party time again," he said. "Thanks to my son, I'm coming now."

"To have him and have him here with me, it's great," John Loggies said, pointing to his father and son. "And we're going to do it tonight, I know it. The Dark Knight's in the house and we're gonna win, I just know it."

Mets fans were loading up on barbecue, and getting a little saucy with Royals fans over who will have the winning team.

""I think the Royals are going to win the two games here then I think lose one game in the Mets place in New York," Nick Nagel said.

"No, because the Mets are going to sweep them, no chance," Trey Underwood countered.

Cab Driver Jeff Meyers got a chance to meet the Mets on Sunday, well three of them anyway.

"I met three members of the team on Sunday, the Mets, Steve Matz, de Grom, John Niese," Meyers said.

The players gave Meyers a Mets hat, but he said he can't wear it in public.

Barbecue was the pregame meal of choice for many New Yorkers in KC.

"The prime ribs they say melt in your mouth," Jim Loggie said.

Back at home in New York City, Mr. Met acted as conductor for the Metropolitan Opera Chorus as they sang "Meet the Mets" outside Lincoln Center.

"There should be a Met opera," said longtime Mets fan Ned Handlen. "This was kind of an opera season. Syndergaard would be a great character in an opera."

Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced One World Trade Center's spire will be lit up blue and orange Tuesday night in honor of the Mets.

"New York stands with them as they set out to reach the zenith of the Fall Classic," said Cuomo. "From past setbacks to last week's victory in the National League Championship Series, the Mets and their fans have shown a dedication and perseverance that is second to none. And with strong pitching, solid defense and aggressive and timely hitting, the Mets have proven that they have what it takes to win. Tonight, we are all Mets fans, and I join all New Yorkers in cheering on New York's team. Let's go Mets!"

Cuomo has a bet going with Missouri Gov. Jay Nixon. If the Mets win, Cuomo will be sent not only barbecue, but coffee from the Roasterie, which Kansas City says is the best coffee in the world.
